About Kauai

With an area of just over 550 square miles of land and population of about 59,000, Kaui is the fourth largest of the eight main Hawaiian Islands. The island, also nicknamed “The Garden Isle,” is said to have gotten its name when Hawai’iloa, the Polynesian navigator who is believed to be the first to discover the islands, named the island after a favorite son, Kaua’i. Although Kauai may not be as populated or as developed as the neighboring island of Oahu, Kauai is still an extremely popular tourist destination because of its pristine beauty and paradise-like atmosphere.
Although Kauai offers great dining, shopping, and entertainment opportunities, most of the people who travel to Kauai come in search of excellent outdoor activities. Kauai is a popular destination for helicopter tours that take visitors around the island to explore its natural beauty as well as water sports at any of the island’s beautiful beaches, or just walking or hiking through one of Kauai’s beautiful parks. The Na Pali Coast State Park is home to, of course, the world famous Na Pali Coast. The park offers beautiful beaches and hiking trails. However, some of the beaches and trails are accessible only by boat. Other popular attractions include the Wailua River State Park, Waimea Canyon State Park, Kalalau Valley, Poipu Beach, Hanalei, Coconut Coast, and the Kauai Museum.
